A Care Farm For Caregivers

A Care Farm For Caregivers

Our Mission

At Hazen's Horse Haven, we believe that community grows stronger when we bring new possibilities for healing and connection. Our unique approach centers on the profound relationship between humans and horses, creating a sacred and spiritual space where transformation naturally unfolds.

Each session places both horse and human at the heart of the experience, with Daniel Hazen serving as a mindful guide and facilitator. This approach creates a powerful reciprocal relationship: as humans offer their love and presence to the horses, they receive invaluable wisdom and emotional support in return.

The Haven holds special meaning for caregivers, who often set aside their own needs while tending to others. Here, surrounded by the gentle presence of horses and supported by others who understand their journey, caregivers find a sanctuary for their own healing. Through shared experiences of grief, growth, and renewal, we're building more than a program -- we're nurturing a community where healing happens naturally, one connection at a time.

Daniel Hazen

Daniel Hazen is a certified life coach and Horse Facilitated Grief Guide whose profound connection with both humans and horses has shaped his life's work. With over two decades of experience working alongside youth and advocating for mental health awareness, Daniel brings a unique blend of compassion, wisdom, and practical guidance to his role at Hazen's Horse Haven.

As a rites of passage guide and vision quest facilitator, Daniel understands that every individual's journey through grief and personal transformation is unique. His approach acknowledges that there is no linear process to healing, particularly when working with those who have lost parents or siblings.

Through his Horse-Human Connection Academy certification and Equine Assisted Learning Mindfulness Practice certification, he creates safe spaces where profound healing can occur through the extraordinary bond between humans and horses.

Daniel's extensive experience includes team communication development and daily work in nursing homes, where, as a certified Ombudsman, he witnesses firsthand the challenges faced by family caregivers. These experiences awakened him to the critical need for holistic support systems for caregivers, leading him to expand his practice to include specialized programs for those caring for loved ones. His commitment to ceremonial work and the importance of personal rituals adds a deeply meaningful dimension to his programs.

With additional certifications including The School of Lost Borders Rites of Passage Guiding and Ultimate Courage: Self Compassion Training for Men, Daniel brings a comprehensive toolkit to his work. His greatest passion remains at the heart of Hazen's Horse Haven: fostering meaningful connections between humans and horses, creating transformative experiences that honor each person's unique journey through life's challenges and transitions.

Daniel lives on the Hazen Family Farm alongside his partner, Joanne, his father, Dan Sr., and their glorious herd of horses.

Joanne Hart

Joanne serves as Hazen's Horse Haven's Land Steward and Horse Healer, bringing with her a profound connection to both the earth and its equine inhabitants. Her deep understanding of land stewardship runs in her blood -- her family's farming heritage spans over a century, instilling in her a natural wisdom about caring for the land through the rhythms of the seasons.

As a holistic horse healer and communicator, Joanne brings a unique blend of traditional and spiritual practices to the Haven. Her work includes crafting herbal and holistic remedies for the horses, offering Reiki and bodywork specifically designed for equine healing, and maintaining an intimate understanding of each horse's needs through careful observation of their body language and behavior. This deep attunement to the horses' well-being complements the Haven's healing mission.

In her role as Land Steward, Joanne nurtures the Haven's natural abundance through mindful planting, growing, and harvesting practices throughout the year. Her hands-on approach to land management ensures that both the grounds and their equine residents thrive in harmony, creating the perfect environment for healing and growth.

Our Farm

Hazen's Horse Haven is more than a working farm -- it's a place of healing, connection, and transformation.

Located near their Amish neighbors in Ogdensburg, New York, this vibrant sanctuary is home to horses, sheep, goats, and buzzing bee colonies, alongside flourishing flower, herb, and vegetable gardens.

Each element contributes to the rich tapestry of farm life and experiential learning opportunities that deeply resonate with local community members.

The story of the farm began with Dan Sr., who discovered something profound in the presence of horses during a time of deep personal loss following the passing of his youngest son, Michael, Daniel's brother.

Through this experience, the Hazen family first discovered the extraordinary healing power of horses -- a discovery that would shape the farm's future.

Today, Hazen's Horse Haven operates with a thoughtful and sustainable approach to both its mission and its resources. The farm's financial structure reflects its values, with equal portions dedicated to land stewardship, horse care and well-being, and operational sustainability. This balanced approach ensures the Haven can continue its vital work while honoring its commitment to both the land and its animal residents.

Sessions at the farm take place in nature's classroom. Visitors are encouraged to come prepared for genuine farm experiences -- wearing appropriate footwear and weather-suitable clothing -- as they engage in transformative outdoor sessions with the horses. This commitment to authentic experiences in nature creates the optimal environment for both human growth and equine well-being, allowing for genuine feedback and connection.

Hazen's Horse Haven stands as a living legacy to Dan Sr.'s journey of healing through horses. Daniel's mission has evolved to include not only serving the community through equine-facilitated healing but also ensuring his father can spend his remaining years on the land he loves most, surrounded by the horses that helped him heal. In this way, Hazen's Horse Haven continues to honor its origins while serving as a beacon of hope and healing for others, ensuring that Dan Sr.'s legacy lives on through every life touched by this special place.
